In adulthood, a complete cure, i.e. freedom from symptoms in all situations, is rarely achievable. Certain forms of therapy that promise quick and certain success are repeatedly advertised in the media and literature. However, one should always be careful here and consider the financial interests behind them.
Nevertheless, experience has shown that there are effective methods to positively influence stuttering. The most appropriate form of therapy for each individual stutterer is determined at the beginning together with the patient through diagnostics and discussion.
On the one hand, the stutterer can change their speech by learning certain speech techniques and thus achieve more fluent speech.
Secondly, a non-avoidance approach is used to improve acceptance of one's own stuttering. This gives the stutterer better control over their stuttering, which can prevent it or make it easier. This requires a reduction in fears and negative attitudes towards stuttering, which often also leads to a reduction in symptoms. Psychological counseling can be useful if the patient suffers from strong emotional stress, panic or severe self-deprecation.
Aim of the therapy
The aim of therapy of poluttering is to improve the speech process and articulation through targeted control processes. First of all, it is important to raise awareness of the disorder and its severity. To this end, exercises are carried out in the areas of articulation motor skills, speech breathing and voice quality.
Reducing the speed of speech is also an important part of the therapy. In order to improve the polterer's awareness of the disorder, cassette or video recordings are used to raise awareness of the symptoms.
