The therapy of orofacial myofunctional disorders covers several areas:
- Correction of the incorrect tongue resting position,
- Strengthening exercises for the tongue and lip muscles,
- Improving mouth closure by activating nasal breathing,
- building up a beneficial whole-body tension and
- developing and consolidating the correct swallowing process when eating and swallowing saliva.
The correction of affected sounds (sigmatism) should only be started once the muscles in the facial area have been sufficiently strengthened by the previous therapy and the correct swallowing pattern has been established. The overall aim of the therapy is to achieve a balanced muscular condition of the face, tongue and jaw and to ensure that the swallowing process takes place correctly and automatically.
